Using EMDR to Breakthrough Stuckpoints
Your Coach will work with you to determine your goals and the areas in which you are stuck, and where you want to break through to get to the next place in your life. Examples of things you might break free from could include:
- Limiting Beliefs About Yourself (I’m not good enough or successful enough.)
- Career Uncertainty (I don’t know where I’m going with my career.)
- Personal or Professional Indecision (I can’t make up my mind about anything.)
- Lack of Personal or Professional Confidence (I’m not sure I’m good at anything.)
- Mental Obstacles (I think I hold myself back, but I don’t know how.)
- Distressing Memories (The way my last boss or spouse treated me taints my view of my future.)
- Lack of or Low Self Esteem (I don’t feel good about myself, so how can I expect anyone else to think good things about me.)
- Chronic Negative/Critical Responses (I’m not sure that’s going to work. Some people say I’m hard to satisfy.)
- Difficulty Envisioning Future Options (I’m not sure how I’m ever going to find happiness.)
- Negative Beliefs (Life has taught me things usually don’t work out.)
- Negative or Limiting Beliefs About Money (I’m never going to earn what I think I should, and I’ll never have enough money. People won’t pay me what I’m worth.)
- Chronic Distrust of Others (I doubt they have my best interests at heart, you know you can only trust yourself.)
- Distress Around Public Speaking (I’m never speaking the way I want when I am in front of a room full of people.)
How It Happens
We use different coaching techniques to help you find freedom in difficult areas. One of our specialized techniques is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). This technique allows you to find and shift fundamental limiting beliefs, overcome past negative frames at the root level, and embrace new thoughts about the future. We use an eight-part process modified for this coaching format.
EMDR is commonly used in therapy settings to relieve PTSD, abuse, trauma, grief, or other issues. In this setting, we will specifically target the use of EMDR in the areas of limitations in memories or feelings. Together we will discover the thoughts and experiences that shaped your present-day sense of who you are and help you get to places of new freedom from the things holding you back.
Phases of EMDR Coaching
- Collect history around the troubling issues.
- Train on calming techniques to be used in challenging moments.
- Choose the target area for processing and map out distressing thoughts around the target area.
- Clients will focus on their distressing thought or memory while experiencing some form of bilateral stimulation. This might include processing via visual, auditory, or sensational stimulation to facilitate dual attention around problem thoughts/memories and present moment focus. Examples of this include side-to-side eye movements, listening to a specific soundscape, or performing bodily tapping.
- Validate the efficacy of shifted thoughts and new mental frames.
- Forecast other scenarios that might challenge the new mental frame and set a positive perspective on those situations.
Disclaimer
Since EMDR is often used in therapy settings, it is essential to note that we will not be addressing emotional wounds or capital “T” traumas related to the limitations you may be experiencing. However, it may become evident that the source of difficulty lies in one of those areas. In that case, we will recommend that you pause coaching and pursue therapy to resolve the deeper issue uncovered through our EMDR work.

Therapy and Coaching – The Difference
Simply put, therapy can include coaching, but coaching does not include therapy. Therapy will take into account your medical care and needs and could provide long-term support. Coaching will be brief in nature and will focus on obtaining specific goals or outcomes in your life.
